Although Tatsuya Endo’s original Spy x Family manga debuted in 2018, the franchise’s popularity skyrocketed in 2022 after the premiere of CloverWorks and Wit Studios’ anime adaptation. Shortly thereafter, Loid, Anya and Yor Forger became major media icons throughout Japan, with dozens of companies and publications utilizing the characters in their marketing. Earlier this month, the sister magazine to Men’s Non-No likewise featured Anya, this time with her best friend, Becky Blackwell. Google Japan also recently launched an Anya-centric marketing campaign for its Google Lens application. In the first ad, “detective” Anya is shown hunting down clues with her magnifying glass while a narrator describes how to use the app.

Spy x Family‘s story begins with Loid Forger, aka Agent Twilight, a world-renowned spy who has spent years trying to maintain peace between Westalis and its bordering nation, Ostania. In order to infiltrate an elite institution called Eden Academy, Twilight takes a wife named Yor and adopts a young girl named Anya, despite knowing next to nothing about children. However, unbeknownst to him, Yor is an infamous assassin, while Anya is a telepath who can read his every thought. Although Anya’s behavior occasionally baffles Twilight, he quickly forms a genuine bond with her. Anya, enamored with her father’s vocation, tries to help him any way she can while keeping her powers a secret from both of her adoptive parents.
