She’s always bought from the weavers, and always looked out for them, especially during the pandemic, said Aditi Rao Hydari on her mother Vidya Rao
We acquire a lot of habits and our fondness for many things from our parents. This even includes our choices and preferences in fashion. In a similar vein, actor Aditi Rao Hydari opened up about her love for handloom that she has acquired from her mother.
“Amma… the handloom champion! Amma and her cupboard full of handloom sarees, her kumkum bindi and totally mismatched blouses! To wear, share and often to give away the moment any friend of mine or hers sees a saree they love,” Aditi said in a post on Instagram about her mother Vidya Rao, on the occasion of National Handloom Day which was celebrated on August 7, 2023.
“She’s had master weavers and craftspeople on her speed dial since I was little. She’s always bought from the weavers, and always looked out for them, especially during the pandemic,” added Aditi.

She also spoke about how her love for handloom is “because of her”.
For the unversed, National Handloom Day celebrates ethnic handloom in the country and their manufacturers too.
With a flair for ethnic wear that blends classic elegance with modern sensibilities, the actor and style icon is known for her love of the versatile fabric which she has adorned on several occasions.
Previously, wearing a rani pink shade, Aditi was seen in a handwoven silk brocade jumpsuit from designer Payal Khandwala in November 2022 for Vogue’s Forces of Fashion summit.
The sharp V-neckline, waistline, and wide-legged bottoms added to the charm of the look. It was complemented with a polki diamond jadau necklace and a longer ruby with rose-cut diamonds necklace.
Recall her 2021 bespoke green silk outfit with matching sharara pants look. The Sanjay Garg ensemble drew appreciation from one and all for its intricate ‘jaal’ motifs in gold thread, along with the subtle pop of pink silk lining on the kurta.
